What To Wear According To Your Body Shape?

Getting dressed is a whole lot easier when you know what pieces work best for your shape. The first step to finding the right clothes to bring out your inner goddess, or rock star or CEO is to figure out your specific body type so that you can play up your best features:

Most women fall into one of four categories:

  • Circle – thick around the middle
  • Triangle –  larger at the bottom
  • Hourglass – curvy but evenly proportioned
  • Rectangle – straight up and down

The circle: If you tend to gain weight around the middle (or you simply want to hide a few post-pregnancy pounds), clothes should fit loosely around the midsection to conceal a full stomach and more snugly elsewhere to play up thin limbs.

What to wear? Slim-Cut Pants, Shift Dress, Tunic, Empire-Waist Top

Styles to avoid: Anything that draws attention to the middle―like high-rise pants, belts, and waist-cinching tops.

The triangle: The triangle shape is defined as shoulders and torso that are narrower than the hips.

What to wear?  Wide-Leg Pants, Tailored Jacket, Boatneck Top, A-Line Skirts

Styles to avoid: Shapeless, oversize sweaters; skinny jeans and pants; and skirts in a flimsy, curve-hugging fabric, like silk.

The hourglass: With an ample chest, a narrow waist, and full (but not wide) hips, the hourglass shape, although evenly proportioned, can seem as if it’s all angles.

What to wear? High-Waisted Pants, Wrap Dress, V-Neck Top, Pencil Skirt

Styles to avoid: Shapeless or boxy styles, like baby-doll dresses, tunics, and oversize cardigans.

The rectangle: With little definition at the waist, the straight-up-and-down rectangle figure is often considered boyish. Opt for styles that fit snugly at your middle but flare out at the bottom (whether it’s a skirt or pants) to create curves.

What to wear?  Boot-Cut Pants, Fitted Jacket, Flared Skirt

Styles to avoid: Dresses that are tight all over and anything too flowy or unstructured around the waist, like Empire-waist tops.

Have fun…thank us later!
